Bramston Beach - Paul Curtis
"A place to return to..." I'm often asked to name "a favourite
place" by many people looking for a shortcut to paradise. I was
put on the spot once on John McKenzie's radio program and
realized where this sort of question might end - with maybe
hundreds of people descending a quiet, pristine part of North
Queensland and ending in it's ruination. So at the risk of my
credibility I think I referred to some already popular spot on
the Tableland. However, I'll take a risk here, because with
about 7,000 books sold over the years I have yet to see some of
my favourite spots over run with people - despite concerns of
authorities charged with the preservation of these places. There
is a place that I, and thousand of others, know that I keep
returning to. Surely this must be a favourite place! Unique is a
word like iconic that is used all too readily to describe some
nice places. One environment that North Queensland possesses
that I suspect is unique is where tropical rainforest tumbles
down from mountain ranges to azure waters of the barrier reef.
And one place that this attribute is particularly scenically
presented is a national park area at the north end of Bramston
Beach, south of Cairns. When I stumbled across this place about
25 years ago I couldn't believe its beauty. This is one of the
most picturesque sections of coastline within 150km of Cairns.
Access is easy from the township of Bramston Beach and some of
the best beachside camping in North Queensland is available. The
beach walk to the north is second to none. Each little headland
you pass presents another breathtaking view - you just can't
stop walking to see what is around the next bend. Tide and time
permitting you can walk to the Russell River mouth. Strangely
enough, over the 25 years I have been visiting at least once a
year I am not of the impression that it's getting any busier.
And I surely hope this little bit of text doesn't change that
too much. Happy travels and please leave the place tidy. - Paul
of the Nauth - January 2009
